REQUIREMENTS FOR A WIND RESOURCE ASSESSMENT

For any reliable study a site visit is recommended

Wind data:

Wind data are divided in two categories, Long-Term and Short-Term data

Long-term data more than 10 years

Short-Term are more than 12 months.

The period for short-term and long-term data series is recommended to have an overlap for 12 months or more.

Long Term reference measurement point:

“Long term” data for wind speed, wind direction, standard deviation and gust e.g.

from nearby reference station, preferably 10 or more years of data. Formatted electronically for spreadsheet import.

Point of measurement:

  • Height of measurement's (agl.)
  • Mast altitude above sea level (asl.)
  • Mean, min. and max temperature
  • Air densit
  • Ø Position of station (co-ordinates (UTM) or geographic (degrees & minutes))
  • Topographic map (with altitude lines) in scale 1:25,000 at the site and approximately 5 km from the site boundary in all directions
  • Topographic map (with altitude lines) in scale 1:50,000 at the site and approximately 20 km from the site boundary in all directions
  • Reliability of data (calibration information, new equipment, etc.)
  • Pictures from the mast(s) and surroundings

On site Wind Data:

One year short-term data from the site for Wind Speed, Wind Direction, Standard Deviation and Gust is recommended.

  • Point of measurement:
  • Height of measurement(s) (agl).
  • Mast altitude above sea level (asl).
  • Annual mean, minimum and maximum temperature.
  • Annual mean, minimum and maximum air pressure.
  • Position of met. station (coordinates (UTM) or geographic (degrees & minutes))
  • Reliability of data and equipment (calibration information, new equipment, etc.)
  • Pictures from the station and surroundings 360° around.

Maps: ​

Maps with recognized coordinates UTM (with datum) or Geographic
(degrees & minutes)

  • Topographic map (with altitude lines) in scale 1:25,000 at the site and approximately 5 km from the site boundary in all directions
  • Topographic map (with altitude lines) in scale 1:50,000 at the site and approximately 20 km from the site boundary in all directions.

Other requirements:

  • The site must be marked on the maps
  • Coordinates for the site boundary.
  • Information about vegetation
  • Pictures of site
  • Value of Wind Turbines
  • Value of MW
  • Type of Wind Turbine(s)
  • Any restrictions like:
  • Distances (roads, houses, etc.)
  • Protected areas

Environmental effects:


  • Noise
  • Visual impact
  • Agriculture
  • Archaeology
  • Flora & fauna
  • Others.
